The Dangers of Mixing Cymbalta & Alcohol: Interactions & Side Effects

cymbalta and alcohol

Many binge drinkers may not be alcohol dependent, but their binge drinking habits make them susceptible to several health problems. This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as depression, anxiety). It is also used to help relieve nerve pain (peripheral neuropathy) in people with diabetes or ongoing pain due to medical conditions such as arthritis, chronic back pain, or fibromyalgia (a condition that causes widespread pain). Duloxetine belongs to a class of drugs known as serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

Drug details

This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Before taking Cymbalta, tell your doctor if you take any of the medications listed above. They may monitor you more closely to see whether you’re at risk of bleeding. Or they may decide to use a different medication to treat your condition. Using Cymbalta with other drugs that also increase serotonin may raise your risk of serotonin syndrome. If you miss a dose of Cymbalta, take your missed dose as soon as you remember.

Reading the Medication Guide

While these side effects are generally mild and temporary, it is important to be aware of them. If they persist or become bothersome, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional. If there are any concerns or questions about Cymbalta treatment, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for guidance and adjustments to the treatment plan. Cymbalta, also known as duloxetine, is primarily known for its effects on serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain. However, it has also been found to have some impact on dopamine.Duloxetine inhibits the reuptake of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in reward, motivation, and movement control.

  1. If you have questions or concerns about your risk of dependence with Cymbalta, talk with your doctor.
  2. Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term studies.
  3. Restless legs wasn’t specifically reported as a side effect by people taking Cymbalta in clinical trials.

Warnings for Cymbalta

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, can you drink alcohol while taking amitriptyline nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). What are the side effects of Cymbalta in children?

We now focus on the novel medications and their signaling mechanisms by which they exert their effects on AUDs. These novel medications were developed to minimize the alcohol induced side effects and improve the quality of life. These groups of medications include novel as well as FDA-approved medications that are being repurposed for the prevention and treatment of AUDs. In some studies, the combination of these drugs was reported to exhibit potent effects than when they are used alone.

Worsened Depression

After that, your doctor may increase the dose to 60 mg per day. It’s not known how often allergic reaction occurred in people taking Cymbalta in clinical trials. For adults ages 65 years and older, the recommended starting dosage for GAD is 30 mg once per day. Doctors may then increase the dosage to 60 mg once per day if they determine it’s safe to do so. Cymbalta, also known as duloxetine, is a medication that is commonly used to treat conditions such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and peripheral neuropathy.

Note that some males and females in this study reported improvements in sexual desire, performance, and satisfaction with Cymbalta treatment. This may be because the medication helped to reduce the symptoms of their condition. Side effects in adults may also occur in children and adolescents who take Cymbalta. Children and adolescents should have height and weight monitored during treatment. Read this Medication Guide before you start taking Cymbalta® and each time you get a refill.

Acute effects of memantine were evaluated in combination with alcohol in moderate alcohol drinkers on alcohol dependence and craving. In a double-blind three day long inpatient human study, 18 non-alcohol dependent volunteers were given memantine (0, 15, and 30mg) which was administered 4 hours before alcohol (1.5g/l body water) was given. The results showed that, memantine chronic relapsing disease pretreatment attenuated the craving for alcohol before alcohol administration, but not after alcohol consumption. Previously the effects of nalmefene and other opioid agonist were evaluated in male Wistar rats that self-administer ethanol in standard operant conditioning method or exposed to 4-week intermittent ethanol vapor exposure for 14 hours per day for 4 weeks.

Taking Cymbalta in higher doses or more often than prescribed will not make it more effective, and may increase side effects. It is also used to treat general anxiety disorder in adults and children who are at least 7 years old. Older people are at particularly high risk for harmful alcohol–medication interactions. Aging slows the body’s ability to break 5 key differences between crack and cocaine down alcohol, so alcohol remains in a person’s system longer. Older people also are more likely to take a medication that interacts with alcohol—in fact, they often need to take more than one of these medications. When a woman drinks, the alcohol in her bloodstream typically reaches a higher level than a man’s even if both are drinking the same amount.

They found no difference between the quetiapine treated patients and placebo group in terms of percent heavy drinking days and other alcohol drinking outcomes. However, quetiapine significantly reduced depressive symptoms and improved sleep (Litten et al, 2012). Baltieri et al, conducted a comparative study of topiramate and naltrexone for the treatment of alcohol dependence. In a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, patients received either topiramate (300 mg/day), naltrexone (50 mg/day), or placebo. Similarly, topiramate and naltrexone were evaluated for percent of subjects with no heavy drinking days (PSNHDDs) in two large alcohol clinical trials, namely COMBINE and a multi-site topiramate trial.
